Yes it’s a seatbelt receiver, specifically for an 05-10 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but what’s the tube? Is it going to blow a finger off if I try to replace it on my mother’s Jeep?
(P roblem is you have to push the button while inserting the buckle and the dash doesn't register it's buckled so it constantly chimes (or else we'd have just disabled the chime as she religiously where's her seatbelt.))

pretensioner. it tightens the seatbelt to hold you into the seat if the RCM commands front airbag deployment. yes, it’s pyrotechnic, so don’t be careless. however, the pins for the igniter are shunted (shorted together) if the connector isn’t plugged in, so it’s highly unlikely to go off on its own. plugging in the connector releases the shunt and makes it “live.”

It’s a tensioner of sorts according to quick googling. It should be self contained and only a piston, the top portion houses the gas generator to fill the piston.
Wait: Apparently this isn’t a universal design.

there are “rack and pinion” types as well, and I think those crazy Germans patented a design using a Wankel-style rotor. Don’t know if that one is actually in production.

The photo I saw was from an F10 BMW... it used a piston and an explosive (I mean, gas generator according to the internet) , so it probably wasn’t BMW.

I never knew these existed. I wonder how many body shops don’t replace these when they repair a wrecked vehicle?
I imagine a vehicle that crashes with 4 occupants, in which all airbags and tensioners are set off, is
likely going
to
be totalled. Some new vehicles
have inflatable belts too.

I don’t think they have a choice, IIRC when I looked at the buckle on my mom’s wrecked Fusion there’s no way it could have been re-used.

don’t even need that much carnage. This totaled a (very good condition) 2013 Fusion Titanium:
deployed the driver airbag, driver side curtain, driver knee airbag, and seat belt pretensioner.
as I understand it, unless the car is basically new, deployment of any airbag will put it pretty close to the line of being a write-off.

They do save money. It’s a lot cheaper fixing or replacing a busted up car than it is trying to fix a busted up person (and replacing same is out of the realm of possibility.)
Rightly so, the attitude now is “screw the car, the people inside are far more important.”
